Abstract

Toyota has hit many stumbling blocks in the last decade, which forced CEO Aiko Toyoda to develop a new strategy for Toyota’s future success, “Global Vision,” in 2011. He not only started restructuring Toyota globally to give more power and control to the regional management of the corporation but also started other initiatives. One of the initiatives of Global Vision is intended to increase career opportunities for women inside Toyota. Many challenges still remain in Toyota’s efforts to increase the gender disparity in the workforce, particularly when it comes to improving representation in management. Less than 1% of Toyota's managers are women, which is far below the industry average of 33%. Toyota’s plans are clearly presented but seem to be lacking in follow-through sufficient to reach the stated goals for gender equality. In this case, a fictitious Human Resources Director in Japan was created to carry out this gender initiative for Toyota.
