Abstract

This case will help students to discover the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry. It is important to understand that these technologies are opening new horizons for the future and creating new use cases in our everyday life in different fields like finance, business, or government. Taking the perspective of the protagonist, they will also understand what are the major principles that need to be developed to understand the environment of the company, what is the strategy and the business plan, and finally how to develop a strategy for the future. The case follows the evolution of Coinbase, which is a very innovative company that evolved within a new industry in which everything had to be built. The different decisions as well as the strategies implemented since the creation of the company will allow students to understand how to develop a long-term strategy and make it evolve taking into account the company's environment. Coinbase is a mission focused company that has a goal to create an open financial system for the world. Brian Armstrong has already achieved a part of his path to create an open financial system with the IPO of Coinbase. This has been possible because the company is mission focused and pursues the goal defined from the start. The company also grows by investing in new, innovative companies through Coinbase Ventures, allowing them to grow the industry even more. They will also see what the risks are in this industry and will have to find ways to address them.
