Abstract
This case study presents Expatriation program of the Novelis Asia as they merged Aleris in 2020. The case explains the six phase of expatriation process with culture difference of China and South Korea. There are 6 phase of the expatriation process 1) Identification 2) Admiration 3) Selection 4) Preparation (Training) 5)Relocation and 6) Measurement. Case readers will consider how this each phase works and how the corporation or HR department encourage expatriates to do best practices. Corporation sometimes undergoes the failure of the expatriation and the case introduces some examples of the failure of the expatriation program. It is essential for the company to choose right person for the position and to have HR system to support expats for relocation, mentoring and training accordingly. Case gives real expat package of Novelis and case readers evaluate expat’s benefit package and can discuss how the corporate’s benefit package may be improved. Company sometimes has conflict with employees due to discrepancy of the benefit package and has to find local talents. Case discussed the pros & cons of the local hire. One of the challenging things for expatriation is culture difference. Hofstede framework was utilized to compare culture difference between China and South Korea. Hofstede’s culture index is a theory utilized to examine the cultural differences between countries and to differentiate the business practices between cultures. The primary purpose of the Hofstede theory is to encourage case readers to take into a consideration of the culture difference when employees work in difference society. The most important takeaway from the case study is how to succeed in expatriation and what should be prepared for successful expatriation.
