Yamada Construction Co. LTD 2022
Abstract
This is a masked case about Yamada Construction in Niigata, Japan. The protagonist, company, and location have been masked per request of the Chairman of the company. The case revolves around Mr. Kenji Matsumoto. During his tenure at Yamada Construction, he rose from a general drawings intern to the chairman of the industry association. The case focuses on the industry following the Japanese Bridge Scandal. The practice of dangou was largely regarded as industry standard, and following the imprisonment of many company executives and government officials, the practice was abolished leading to companies either thriving under the new open bidding system, or closing entirely due to inability to change. The protagonist was able to change with the times and build one of the premier construction firms in the industry. Throughout the case, Mr. Matsumoto’s direct quotes are used as teaching moments for students to learn directly from Kenji. This was done at the request of Mr. Matsumoto as he felt the best way for students to learn about management and leadership was to hear directly from a leader. The case is designed to teach students about management styles and leadership as well as changing regulations and the impacts on an industry. The case is also designed to give readers moral dilemmas regarding long held traditions versus legal ambiguity. Students should be able to discuss leadership styles and ethical issues upon completion of the case. This case is designed to be used on a basic level by undergraduate business students, and advanced analysis by graduate students.
