Abstract
Shooting for Success is a basketball training family business in San Antonio, Texas founded by David Jones a former professional basketball player in 2004. Shooting for Success offers many training services that include private training, group training, club teams and summer camps. David Jones has a unique ability to connect with customers where they don’t just see him as a basketball coach but as a positive influence in their kids’ lives. However, David Jones faced many hardships and obstacles throughout his life, which led to his motivation to become a professional basketball player and start Shooting for Success when he retired. Those experiences and what he learned throughout his career is how he developed the core values of his business. One of them is leadership which he teaches to his coaches and athletes. When David Jones was asked to describe his leadership style, he said “Authentic”. Mailee Jones his daughter, has started working in the business as a coach when she’s not playing for her professional basketball team. She has expressed her interest in one day becoming the business successor in the near future. David Jones wants to prepare her for this eventual leadership role of leading Shooting for Success. However, he is faced with the dilemma of whether he can truly pass down all of his leadership style that is built from his own life experience or enable his daughter to develop her own leadership style to succeed in the business. Has David Jones done enough to prepare his organization for future Success? On the other hand, will Mailee Jones be able to bring Shooting for Success to new heights than her predecessor? The case will provide deep insights from the perspectives of leadership development, leadership style and organizational change.
