Hideaki Miyajima

Biography

Professor Hideaki Miyajima is Professor and Associate Dean at NUCB Business School. He previously served as Professor at Waseda University's Faculty of Commerce, where he also held positions as Trustee and Advisor to the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study.

After completing graduate studies in economics at the University of Tokyo, he joined Waseda University's Faculty of Commerce as a Research Associate in 1985. He subsequently served as Lecturer and Associate Professor before being appointed Professor in 1995. He received his Ph.D. in Commerce from Waseda University in 2005.

Since 2002, he has served as a Faculty Fellow at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI), and from 2010 to 2018, he served as Director of the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study. His research focuses on corporate governance, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and Japanese economic history. He conducts empirical research on the evolution of corporate governance and ownership structures in Japanese firms, corporate finance, and the economic effects of M&A, with particular emphasis on the relationship between corporate governance reforms, corporate competitiveness, and capital efficiency.

In 2021, he received the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Research Category) for his empirical research on the evolution and functioning of Japan's corporate governance system. In 2023, he received the Outstanding Paper Award at the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) Academic Network Conference.
