In the fall semester of 2020, Nagoya Campus will be running face-to-face classes, with ventilation, social distance, and anti-virus measures in place. 10/10/2020 "Technology & Operations Management" by Prof. Shigetsune Yamoto will be introduced. The course is taught by Professor Shigetsune Yamoto.

Professor Shigetsune Yamoto, "Technology & Operations Management"

This class focuses on two representative areas of Technology & Operations Management (TOM): Innovation Management (management of R&D and product/service development) and Operations Management (production and operations management). The goal is to acquire the perspectives and thinking of TOM and to be able to deal with real-world issues in a flexible manner. In addition, students will acquire practical skills not only for solving problems in the field, but also for long-term strategic perspectives.

Operations management

In the afternoon class on the first day, we used the case of Toyota Motor Corporation in the U.S., a Harvard Business School bestseller, to discuss solutions for efficient cost reduction in the production process, using specific examples. The factory cited the problem of a rapid increase in defective seats when mass production of automobile assembly began, and analyzed what the root causes were, such as whether it was human error during assembly or a high incidence of defects in the products originally delivered, and pursued countermeasures to find out from which perspective the problems should be identified and how they should be solved. We will analyze the root causes of the problems and seek solutions from which perspective. From the lively discussion facilitated by Professor Shigetsune Yamoto, it was derived that it is important to create a system that prevents mistakes, rather than solving problems by effort.
