MSc in Management
Professor Guo conducted a lecture on Industrial Organization, an elective module for the Masters in Management(MiM) program. Through virtual case method lectures delivering class discussion guided by analytical frameworks, the course provides students with a solid understanding of the impact of firms’ behavior on various market outcomes such as prices, quality, varieties of products, and the associated welfare properties.
The course serves as a foundation to prepare students for further study in the area of industrial organization. It is also helpful for those students who plan to pursue careers in public policy analysis and management consulting sectors.
Throughout the course, Prof. Guo highlights the concept of market structure and how it influences the strategic behavior of firms and their customers, and explores managerial policies, government remedies and context of existing competition laws. Over the last days of the course, participants engaged in discussion of the platform economy and the challenges P2P platforms face worldwide, using Uber in Hong Kong as an example; they also focused on WhatsApp and considered the different effects of mergers and acquisitions in network markets and system markets, as opposed to those in markets selling physical commodities.
Opportunities to consider how digitalization has impacted and will continue to affect industrial organization will be essential to the growth of tomorrow's business leaders. Courses such as these prepare young students of business for their roles as managers of the most influential companies of the digital age.
