MBA "Business Succession & Innovation" by visiting professor Yasuhiro Ochiai in an online class

Business Succession & Innovation

MBA "Business Succession & Innovation" by Visiting Professor Yasuhiro Ochiai. This class focuses on the case of business succession, which has been the most important issue in family business research, and analyzes the entrepreneurial activities of family businesses from multiple perspectives and over time. In some parts of the class, we will also conduct comparative case studies with those of non-family businesses in order to really clarify the characteristics of family businesses.

Intergenerational linkage of managerial behavior (cross-generational entrepreneurship)

Business Succession & Innovation

On the third day of the class, we used the case of Amidaike Daikoku, a confectionery manufacturer that has been in business for over 200 years. In family businesses, which are said to account for 97% of all Japanese companies, there are cases where generational conflicts of opinion can lead to a split in the organization, but in the case of Amidaike Daikoku, even though there were conflicts of opinion with the previous generation, they were resolved without escalation. In the case of Amidaike Daikoku, there was a conflict of opinion with the previous generation, but the conflict was resolved without escalating. I will read and analyze the case to find out why the company continues to be successful and how to resolve the conflict between generations. In a family business, the successor must inherit the business and traditions from the predecessor, and in his or her own time, make management innovations that fit the times, and pass on the business as well as the traditions to the next generation. From this case, the students discussed from various perspectives what the successors refer to and inherit from their predecessors' actual business, what changes they make, and what innovations they make. We will cultivate broad thinking and knowledge.
