The Role of Corporate Finance and the Time Value of Money
This lecture begins with an overview of the differences between accounting and finance, the fundamental concepts of corporate finance, and its role. It also explains methods for quantitatively handling the value of cash flows occurring at different points in time.
Risk, Return, and Cost of Capital
Building on the concepts of risk and return in finance, we will learn about the cost of capital as compensation for shareholders and creditors. We will further discuss the relationship between the cost of capital and corporate valuation.
Cash Flow
While being mindful of the differences from accounting profits, we will learn the concept of cash flow, which forms the basis of corporate valuation. We will also explain the fundamental approach to investment projects: how to select the right business and how to choose among several options.
Corporate Valuation
Building on the previous theory, we will explain the DCF method for actually calculating shareholder value and corporate value using specific Japanese company cases. Through these cases, we will also discuss key considerations for business investments and specific measures companies should implement to enhance corporate value.
