CCJ & HBSP Case Method Seminar 2020

CCJ seminer

Harvard Business School (HBS) Knowledge and the Case Center Japan (CCJ) held a one-day webinar on virtual class management as a collaborative project between HBS and the Case Center Japan (CCJ) to exchange and expand on domestic practices.

Since March of this year, when the novel coronavirus spread around the world, the Harvard Business School (HBS) has been providing higher education professionals with a great deal of knowledge about virtual class management. HBS and the Case Center Japan (CCJ), which is operated by our institution, held a virtual case method class, "HBS Knowledge and Domestic Classroom Practice Frontier," on Sunday, August 2, 2020, with 40 students participating online. The seminar, hosted by CCJ, was a one-day webinar to further upgrade the virtual case method teaching practice in Japan and was opened by Mr. Brandon from HBS, who gave an address to the participants.

Selected materials published by Harvard Business Publishing Education, such as "Teaching with Cases Online," were translated into Japanese and used as teaching materials. In the interactive lecture by Prof. Shinichi Takeuchi, the usefulness of the case method in virtual classes and examples of its use was shared based on the teaching materials, and four themes that are particularly important in virtual class management (time management, discussion planning, class delivery environment, and use of learning management systems) were explored.

In the demo class given by Professor Hiroyuki Kurimoto, a short case study "TAJ HOTEL" was used to experience the actual class that our school is currently conducting in a live virtual format. As the seminar was intended for people involved in virtual education, the participants shared their own challenges and operational problems, and all had a chance to discuss them. With practical advice from Professors Hiroyuki Kurimoto and Shinichi Takeuchi and their co-instructors, a lively exchange of opinions took place, and the seminar seemed to be beneficial for the participants.
