[Class Report] Innovation Management

Dr. Uriel Stettner visited Japan and Nagoya for the first time this week to teach his course titled “Innovation Management.” Coming from the NUCB Business School’s partner institution in Israel, Tel Aviv University Coller School of Management, Dr. Stettner has experience in teaching across various levels from undergraduate to executive. At his home institution, he is an Assistant Professor of Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Department of Strategy. His course offered a great compliment to students who began their studies in April 2018 – having taken innovation themed courses such as Service Design or Innovation and Creative Thinking. About his course and impression at the NUCB Business School, Dr. Stettner said the following;

“The objectives of my class are to better comprehend the multidimensionality of innovation as  a central element to competitive dynamics pushing firms to create new business models, utilize new value chain architectures, and engage or conceive new markets in attempt to create and capture value for stakeholders. As such it is crucial to adopt a holistic perspective on innovation management that concentrates on the entire business model, its ecosystem, and value network moving beyond a focus on technology improvement or new product development. In a global environment the rules of engagement may often converge, yet human decision making is never detached from behavioral biases that arise from opportunism, emotion or cultural values. Coming from Israel to Japan, the apparent cultural differences are not only fascinating and intriguing, but also stress the importance of understanding and appreciating the different approaches to innovation and change. As a professor of strategy and innovation, I have had the privilege of travelling the globe, yet Japan is an extraordinarily amazing country, nation and culture. Through interactions with students and colleagues, my impressions of the NUCB Business School is very much aligned with my impression of Japan: at the forefront of technology, advanced, and driven to excel, yet respectful, friendly, and sincere - a great place to be!“
