Spring 2025 Cultural Immersion Experience at Shirakawago and Takayama City (Gifu Prefecture) on June 18th and 19th

Overview:
International Students studying at NUCB Business School during Spring 2025 semester had the opportunity to spend two days and one night on July 18th and 19th in the neighboring prefecture, Gifu.
Channeling NUCB Business School's bold "Frontier Spirit," students embarked on an unforgettable journey into the heart of Japan’s cultural heritage. Their adventure began with an awe-inspiring visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawago, where time seems to stand still. They stayed overnight in a charming, centuries-old ryokan (traditional Japanese inn), fully immersing themselves in the serene beauty of rural Japan. Hands-on tradition came to life as they crafted their own Sarubobo dolls, the beloved folk talismans of the region, before capping off their experience with a vibrant exploration of historic Takayama City, rich with Edo-period charm and bustling local markets.

Day One:
Arriving around noon at the breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawago, students were immediately greeted by the village’s postcard-perfect scenery of the lush green mountains, charming thatched-roof houses, and a clear blue sky overhead. Under the warmth of the summer sun, students strolled through the narrow streets of this timeless village, taking in its rich history and picturesque charm at every turn.

After a day of exploring the enchanting village of Shirakawago, students had the chance to unwind at the traditional Japanese ryokan, Kiyoharu. Nestled in a tranquil setting, Kiyoharu offered a true cultural immersion, from savoring a beautifully prepared washoku (traditional Japanese multi-course dinner), to soaking in the rejuvenating warmth of a natural onsen (hot spring). It was a perfect blend of relaxation and authentic Japanese hospitality, leaving students refreshed and inspired.

Day Two:
The adventure continued as students took part in a hands-on cultural activity where they crafted their own traditional Sarubobo dolls, a beloved folk charm of the Hida region. Each student added a personal touch, customizing their dolls with unique colors and accessories, making for a memorable and creative experience. With their handmade souvenirs in hand, the group then set off to explore the historic streets of Takayama City, known for its beautifully preserved Edo-period architecture, lively local markets, and warm community atmosphere which was a perfect finale to their cultural journey.
