Audencia Business School (France) Double Degree Program Study Abroad Report: Hirono Matsunaga

Introduction
I had the privilege of participating in the International MBA (IMBA) program at Audencia Business School in Nantes, France, as an exchange student through Nagoya University of Commerce and Business (NUCB)'s DDP study abroad program.

About Audencia Business School
Audencia Business School is located in Nantes, France. Nantes is a safe and comfortable city, with friendly locals and some English speakers. The city boasts historical monuments and museums, and its public transportation (trams and buses) is easy to use, with free public transport on weekends. I found my accommodation through a school-affiliated platform, sharing a home with French students and young professionals who are incredibly kind and helpful. We frequently have social events like Christmas parties and BBQs. I also joined local groups for French people interested in Japan, participating in kimono dressing and Japanese conversation classes. Many French people and international classmates are genuinely interested in Japan, making it a welcoming environment for Japanese students.

Purpose of My Study Abroad
My primary goal for this study abroad was to gain international business experience and personal growth by immersing myself in a global environment. Furthermore, with a keen interest in sustainability, I specifically sought to study at a school renowned for its sustainability and CSR curriculum. I aimed to acquire skills and perspectives necessary for working in global companies by living in a different culture and collaborating with students from diverse backgrounds. I was particularly drawn to Audencia's lecture-based approach, which contrasted with NUCB's case method, aiming to gain more academic and multifaceted business knowledge.

Academic Life at Audencia
The International MBA program at Audencia consists of 30 students from nine countries. The classes typically run from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. While NUCB primarily uses the Case Method, Audencia mainly employs lectures, with occasional case studies. However, lectures are highly participatory, with students actively contributing to discussions, which often leads to deeper understanding. Professors at Audencia have diverse backgrounds in terms of nationalities and careers, with some having extensive experience in European companies, bringing students a broad perspective on real-world business.

The diverse backgrounds of my classmates were a constant source of learning, enriching classroom discussions and group projects. Everyone was actively engaged in class, and a strong sense of mutual support was evident, making the learning environment very collaborative.
Audencia's curriculum is more foundational and academic compared to NUCB's. Students gain extensive academic knowledge and are trained in research methods essential for the final project report. Audencia is renowned for its sustainability and CSR education, with a mandatory sustainability management class offering valuable, unique knowledge not typically covered at NUCB. Other unique courses include "Digital Transformation," "Negotiation," "Blockchain," and "Supply Chain Management". There were also classes focused on post-graduation job hunting, covering CV writing and LinkedIn usage.

Group work, including reports and presentations, is mandatory in almost all classes, emphasizing global team management and overcoming cultural differences. In the latter semester, a mandatory "Consultant Mission" course provided practical experience through company consulting projects. School-sponsored company visits and a trip to the National Assembly in Paris were also valuable experiences.
During my time at Audencia, I was also able to complete the case writing requirement for NUCB's graduation online with guidance. The credits earned at Audencia can be transferred to NUCB, allowing me to graduate from NUCB within two years.

What I Gained from My Study Abroad
Academically, I deepened my foundational knowledge across various business disciplines. The balance of NUCB's practical case method and Audencia's academic theory provided a more well-rounded understanding of business.
Personally, I gained confidence in expressing my opinions and became more open-minded towards differing views. I learned to remain calm during unexpected challenges and became more comfortable with public speaking through frequent presentations and group work. My professional English communication skills improved significantly through daily interactions, presentations, and group discussions. I also became more adept at handling conflict in group settings, focusing on dialogue and practical solutions.
An important realization was Japan's strong presence in the global business world. Japanese companies and business culture were frequently referenced in classes, often surprising my classmates, who held positive impressions of Japan. Seeing Japan from an external perspective shifted my own perception. This made me prouder of my background.
Taking a career break for study abroad was a courageous decision that ultimately became a source of confidence. I now believe that embracing new challenges in education, career, or life leads to growth and a more fulfilling life.
