Arriving in my home country, India, as an exchange student

As an Indian student who grew up in India, everyone perplexed and asked me the same question why I chose to participate an exchange program in India. “Why don’t you opt for exchange somewhere else where you can benefit from new cultural and more broaden experiences?”

From my perspective, doing student exchange program in India will improve my future career prospects. Because of their broader perspective and their exposure to international communities, they are sought after by companies that operate in different parts of the world. The diversity experienced during exchange will broaden my horizons and help me to feel myself a member of the global community. All of these would be a big life experience and as we know experience is the best teacher.

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC), a mature institution with global reputation, imparting high quality management education. It has been playing a pioneering role in professionalizing Indian management through its various programs. Located in Joka, the IIM Calcutta offers an environment in which students can focus on intellectual and personal growth as a close-knit community. As exchange students, I have enrolled in the TERM V, 2016 of PGDM (equivalent to MBA) program. In this term, more than 60 students are participating in this exchange program. The students are from countries like France, Italy, Denmark etc.

To conclude, there are several benefits to participating in international student exchange programs. These programs boost my confidence levels and make myself more tolerant.

Study at The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC)

IIMC offers various international programs, were more than 60 international students enroll every year. I have registered totally 4 courses in my exchange program.  These courses are handled by some of the finest professors in India. The average class size for each course is approximately 40. The Class comprises an eclectic mix of youth and experience. Under the able guidance of the country’s leading management faculty, a passion for continuous learning synergizes with experiences from diverse backgrounds creates an enriching learning environment.
Unlike NUCB Business school, the teaching methodology is more inclined to Lecture base. Case study technique is hardly practiced. More emphasis is given to group work, presentation, and announced or surprise quizzes. Since class participation is given least priority, couldn’t experience much of healthy and active class discussion in the class room. Apart from these, teaching methodology also includes interesting tasks like movie making, survey etc. these activities were challenging and fun to work. During this stay got to attend few guest lecturers attended my greatest minds of the country.
Students at IIMC keep themselves busy in various business case contests, club activities and placement preparations. During informal discussion post classes, learnt interesting things about Indian markets, current trends, challenges etc. Students here are very friendly and supportive towards exchange students. Many eyes breaking events were arranged to make exchange students feel comfortable and part of the institution.
So far, I pretty much enjoying my study exchange experience at IIMC. I have made lots of friends and connections that will help one another for life, which is what I am looking for.

Study at The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC).

Three-month-exchange study at Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has been an incredible experience for me. Although this is my home country where I am used to the cultures, traditions and places, there are always new things to learn.  Indian people are very friendly and easy to get along with, therefore; I have made lots of new good friends and my friends were the best. I can proudly say that nowhere in the world will anyone find friends better than the ones I found in IIMC, I will never forget them nor forget what we did, they changed me into what I am now, they helped me become fluent and achieve all my other goals. It is safe to say that my exchange was a huge success.. In addition, I become part of IIMC University alumni, which is considered one of the most prestigious and top universities in India.

I would definitely recommend IIMC for exchange program to other students. Besides academic, India is also a good place to live and experience new cultures. The cost of living in India is considered to be very cheap compared to Japan, and there are many historical and natural tourist spots to visit. Besides study, my exchange student friends at IIMC spent most of their time traveling across India, ana visited places famous monuments like TajMahal in Agra, Gate of India in Delhi, Jaipur palaces, beaches of Goa and also enjoyed doing activities like trekking in Himalayas, Camel safari in Rajasthan, staying in boat house Kerala.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank NUCB for giving me this opportunity to participate in exchange program at IIMC, because NUCB is the only Japanese School that has MBA exchange agreement with IIMC India.
If I hadn’t come to Japan for study, IIMC would have been my obvious choice to pursue my MBA. There are many programs offered at IIMC. Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), PGPEX (Post Graduate Program for Executives)

During my exchange programs, I took four courses from PGP programs. The details of courses are as follows:

Management of Creativity
Designed to give students planning to become administrations, managers and executives, a better insight and appreciation of human problems in both industrial and non-industrial organizations, the courses in the Organizational Behavior draw upon understanding the processes of organizational growth and development, organizational decision making and the role of an individual and group behavior therein. The course has broadly four objectives: To understand creative process, To help the participant recognize and develop her creative potential, To help recognize, encourage and support the creativity in others with whom the participant must work or live, To help the participant understand the structure and functioning of creative collectivities, specifically formal organizations.
Information Technology and Business Innovation
Information Systems (IS) provides information support to managerial decision-making. It is crucial for effective implementation of the planning and control functions in an organization. Recently, because of the growing capabilities and increasing availability of computer-based tools and communication technologies, IS plays a key role in the formulation and implementation of corporate strategies. This course will enable them to foresee and plan for IT initiatives for very significant strategic benefits. At the same time, it is equally crucial for them to understand the implications of these efforts at innovation for the organization, in terms of requirement of resources and management approaches, in order to be able to actually implement these innovations successfully.
Career Advancement Strategies
While networks, thus far, may have had stronger social rather than professional connotation; its impact on professional life is undeniable. If the workplace is a microcosm, networks are the pathways along which life is enacted there. Therefore, it is vital to understand the workplace as the network that it is and implications of its configuration and composition on careers. Networks serve as conduits of resources in organizations. The position of individuals in their networks and the very structure of their network can define the paths in which their careers unfold. Network ties and contacts have been found to impact what opportunities become available to an individual, availability of resources to perform during such opportunities, accessibility of firm specific-knowledge, compensation and overall career trajectory. Therefore, it is important to understand fundamental characteristics of networks as well as the ways in which individuals can actively utilize networks for their benefit.
Product Management
This course will provide a forum to discuss various background concepts like brand building, positioning, creative advertising and endorsement to influence consumer decision making, innovative promotion & pricing decisions, Product Portfolio analysis & elimination rules. The course shall take up a number of real life New Product/ Brand Launch decisions in India. The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of how a product manager deals with these diverse issues.
