2017年10月〜11月参加レポート
Report for Executive Program “Changing the Game: Negotiation and Competitive Decision–Making”, Harvard Business School
I participated in the “Changing the Game: Negotiation and Competitive Decision–Making” Executive Education module at Harvard Business School from October 28 to November 3, 2017. My purpose of taking this class was to use my knowledge and experience of negotiation, which I acquired through my school life at NUCB and ZSEM (Zagreb school of Economics and Management), at the world’s best business school with business executives from all over the world.
Participants and School Life
Among the eighty-two students, most were executives and Directors in various industries with at least 10 years of work experience. Most students were from North America and other students were from other regions all over the world including Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and Africa but I was the only person from Japan. During the program, we were staying at Esteves Hall with facilities for personal use and also a shared space used for group discussion. The living room was fully equipped for study or group work with white board, printer and projector, and refreshments.
The class consisted of a lecture part, exercise part and case method part. A large volume of materials and business cases were given to us every day and we had to make preparations for the next day’s class individually and also with classmates. This helped us build a good relationship with each other. We had a chat with WhatsApp even after the program.
Preparation
To maximize the opportunity to study in this great environment, I read 8 books which were written by professors of the program and published in Japanese for my preparation. This was very helpful for my class participation. I re-realized that meticulous preparation is very important for decision makings or negotiations, and getting trust is one of the most important factors to get mutual gain. I learned a lot of things from professional experiences and mature altitudes of my classmates.
Awareness through Exercise
Since each one of my classmates had a different background, I sometimes faced a different approach from other group mate even for the same goal. This is the reality of multi-cultural negotiation. However, since all participants of the class had at least 10 years of work experience, I could learn alternative options for negotiations developed from their different perspective based on their own experiences.
I had opportunities not only to participate in summer program at ZSEM but also the Executive program at HBS this year. Since the candidate of summer program at ZSEM was all students, I had a great experience to study with students of other business schools in other countries. On the other hand, the Executive program at HBS was offered to people with certain working experience. This was also valuable experience for me to study with business executives around the world.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for this great opportunity NUCB gave me. This could not be achieved without the experience of great lectures at NUCB, the worldwide relationship between NUCB and other business schools, and the recommendation from NUCB.
